Welcome to Rosita’s Mexican Grill!

Our Story

Rosita's Mexican Grill, nestled in the heart of Seattle, opened its doors on April 9, 1979, and quickly became a cherished community spot for authentic Mexican cuisine. Founded by Sergio Uvence Lopez, his sister Rosa, and her husband Wenceslao Anaya, Rosita’s story is one of family, perseverance, and a passion for food.

Born in Guadalajara and raised in Mexico City, the Lopez siblings grew up in a household where every meal was a celebration of Mexican culture. Their mother, Luisa, a single mother, instilled in them a love of cooking, often selling homemade tamales to support her family. After immigrating to San Francisco in the early 1970s, Sergio and his siblings honed their culinary skills in their uncle’s successful restaurants, setting the stage for what would become their own gastronomic venture.

From Humble Beginnings to a Seattle Staple

Choosing Seattle for its burgeoning love for diverse cuisines, Sergio, Rosa, and Wenceslao found a modest location on Woodlawn Ave, near Green Lake—a sleepy, less-traveled street that posed a challenge in attracting the initial foot traffic. Despite these challenges, Rosita's—named affectionately after Rosa, whom the family called "Rosita" as a young girl—quickly won over locals with its warm, inviting atmosphere and delectable dishes, doubling its patrons from day one.

A Menu Rooted in Tradition

At Rosita's, each dish tells a story. The menu, created by Sergio and his eldest sister Carmen, who joined him shortly after the restaurant's opening, features recipes passed down through generations, with a focus on freshness and authenticity. From our signature enchiladas to our freshly made guacamole, every ingredient is carefully selected to ensure a dining experience that feels like a meal cooked by your Mexican family.

Growth and Community

After its initial success, Rosita's expanded into adjacent spaces, incorporating a full-service bar and a tortilla-making station that delights children and adults alike. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a place where young couples on first dates return years later with their grandchildren. Our family-friendly restaurant has seen countless memories made at its tables, becoming a fixture in Seattle’s culinary landscape.

Our Promise: More Than Just Food

When you dine at Rosita's, you're not just a customer; you're family. Our founders, along with Sergio's daughter Melisa who has joined the management team, continue to greet guests with the same enthusiasm and warmth as they did on opening day. We are proud to have served the Seattle community for over four decades, and we invite you to become part of our continuing story.
